What is balayage?
The short answer
Balayage is a hand-painted colour technique that lightens the hair in soft, blended sweeps, with no harsh line at the root as it grows.
Because the lightener is painted onto the surface of the hair rather than sealed in foils, the result is softer and more natural, and it suits clients who want to go longer between appointments. Many of Tara’s clients combine both techniques: foils through the top for brightness, and balayage underneath for movement.

At the chair, Tara looks at your hair in person, talks through your colour history and lifestyle, and confirms the plan and the price before anything begins.

Paint
Lightener is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair in open air, placed so the colour softens as it grows.

Tone
A toner or gloss sets the exact shade, from cool and bright to warm and golden.

Cut and finish
Your hair is cut and styled so the colour sits the way it will look day to day.
Every step is done by Tara herself, so the person who plans your colour is the person who paints it.

How much does balayage cost in Brisbane?
At Tara Quin in Teneriffe, half head balayage or lived-in blonde starts from $290 and full head from $350. Creative blonding starts from $370. Toner is quoted at your consultation, from $60, and is included in every package. All prices include GST.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
Most balayage appointments take 2.5 to 4 hours, including consultation, application, toning and a cut and style. Longer or thicker hair sits at the higher end.
How often do I need to touch up balayage?
Balayage is designed to grow out softly, so most clients return every 10 to 16 weeks for a full refresh, with an optional toner or gloss every 4 to 6 weeks in between.
Does balayage damage your hair?
Balayage is generally gentler than traditional foils, since lightener is painted onto the surface rather than sealed against the scalp in every section. Premium colour and a strengthening treatment protect condition further.
Will balayage work on dark or brunette hair?
Yes. Balayage was developed for brunettes and suits dark hair beautifully, though very dark or previously coloured hair may need a longer appointment, or a second visit, to lift safely.
