Balayage vs foils: what is the difference?
Foils give a brighter, more uniform lift. Balayage is hand-painted for a soft, blended finish and a seamless root.

How foils work
Fine sections of hair are painted with lightener and wrapped in foil. The foil holds in heat and moisture, so the lightener works evenly and lifts brighter, right up to the root. That makes foils the choice for the lightest blondes, strong brightness around the face, and blending regrowth evenly.
How balayage works
Balayage is painted by hand onto the surface of the hair and left to develop in open air. The colour is placed softly near the root and builds toward the ends, the way hair naturally lightens in the sun. There is no sharp line as it grows, which is what makes it lived-in.
Which suits you
Choose foils if you want:
- the brightest, most even blonde
- lots of light through the top and around your face
- regrowth covered evenly
Choose balayage if you want:
- a soft, blended root that grows out gracefully
- longer between appointments
- sun-lit dimension on brunette or darker blonde hair
You don’t have to pick one. Many of Tara’s clients combine both: foils through the top for brightness and balayage underneath for movement. The right mix depends on your hair and how often you want to come back, which Tara works out with you at your consultation.
Upkeep

Time and price
A full balayage or foil service usually takes 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on the length and thickness of your hair.
